The Gandhi Bazaar Association (GBA) has deleted a social media post that urged Bengaluru citizens to walk for short distances instead of taking an autorickshaw, following widespread backlash. The post, which was published on the GBA's official handle last week, suggested that residents opt for walking over autorickshaws for short trips to reduce traffic congestion and pollution.
Reasons for Backlash
The post drew sharp criticism from netizens who accused the GBA of being out of touch with the realities of Bengaluru's urban life. Many pointed out that walking in the city can be challenging due to poorly maintained footpaths, extreme heat, and safety concerns, especially for women and the elderly. Others argued that autorickshaw drivers, who are already struggling financially, would be adversely affected by such a message.
GBA's Response
In response to the backlash, the GBA deleted the post and issued a clarification. The association stated that its intention was to promote eco-friendly commuting and reduce carbon emissions, not to undermine the livelihoods of autorickshaw drivers. However, the damage had already been done, with many calling the post tone-deaf and insensitive.
The incident highlights the delicate balance between promoting sustainable practices and addressing the practical needs of citizens. As Bengaluru continues to grapple with traffic woes and pollution, such messages require careful consideration of local challenges.
