NMMT to Add 200 CNG and Electric Buses to Green Fleet This Year
NMMT Plans 200 CNG and Electric Buses for Green Fleet

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) has proposed to induct 200 CNG and electric buses into its public transport network under the Green Fleet initiative this year in Navi Mumbai. With 150 CNG and electric buses already in its possession and having phased out diesel-run buses, NMMT plans to procure 100 more CNG and electric buses on its own, for which a budgetary allocation has been provisioned in the current fiscal year. Additionally, NMMT has sent a proposal to the central government to procure another 100 electric buses under the Pradhan Mantri E-Bus Seva Yojana.

Budget Allocation for Eco-Friendly Initiatives

While preparing the annual transport budget, the civic body allocated an estimated Rs 652 crore for procuring eco-friendly new buses and developing more bus termini, installing solar systems for energy sustainability, and setting up electric vehicle charging stations, among other measures. A civic official stated that it was a surplus budget for fiscal 2026-27, with expenditure amounting to Rs 651.9 crore. The budget surplus was around Rs 10 lakh, equivalent to last year's surplus.

Concessions and Infrastructure Development

A civic official said that, maintaining social commitment, various concessions would continue for students, senior citizens, and women in the Navi Mumbai area for travel on public transport buses. It was proposed to develop the bus termini on a commercial basis and achieve savings in electricity costs through solar power projects. To increase the use of environmentally friendly electric vehicles, charging facilities would be provided at 10 locations on a Public Private Partnership basis at the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation vehicle base.
