Apple Accelerates Development of Three AI-Powered Wearables
Apple is intensifying its efforts to create a new generation of AI-driven wearable devices, according to a recent report from Bloomberg. The tech giant is working on three distinct products: smart glasses, a wearable pendant, and camera-equipped AirPods. All of these devices are designed to seamlessly connect to the iPhone, providing Siri with visual capabilities to better understand and interact with the user's surroundings.
Smart Glasses: A Standalone Apple Product
The most advanced of the trio is the smart glasses, internally codenamed N50. Unlike Meta's partnership with Ray-Ban, Apple is taking a different approach by developing its own frames using high-quality materials, including acrylic components. The glasses will be available in multiple sizes and colors, catering to a diverse range of consumers.
These glasses feature two integrated cameras: one high-resolution sensor for capturing photos and videos, and a second dedicated to computer vision, similar to the LiDAR technology found in iPhones. Interestingly, there is no display in the lenses; instead, all interactions are handled through voice commands. Users will be able to make phone calls, listen to music, get navigation directions, and query Siri entirely hands-free. Apple is targeting a production start in late 2026, with a potential launch in 2027.
Wearable Pendant: An iPhone-Centric Accessory
The wearable pendant represents a more unconventional concept in Apple's lineup. Roughly the size of an AirTag, this device can be clipped to clothing or worn as a necklace. Its primary function is to serve as an always-on camera, feeding visual context directly to Siri to enhance AI interactions.
This product draws inspiration from the Humane AI Pin but differs significantly by relying heavily on the iPhone for processing power, eliminating the need for a built-in projector. According to Bloomberg, it remains undecided whether the pendant will include a speaker for two-way conversations with Siri. Currently in the earliest stages of development, there is a possibility that this project could be canceled. If it proceeds, a launch around 2027 is anticipated.
Camera-Equipped AirPods: Near-Term Innovation
Among the three wearables, camera-equipped AirPods are the closest to reaching the market, with a potential release as early as this year. The cameras integrated into these AirPods are low-resolution and specifically designed for AI awareness rather than traditional photography. Their purpose is to help Siri interpret the user's environment, enabling more contextual and responsive assistance without focusing on capturing memories.
Strategic Context and Competitive Landscape
Apple's push into AI wearables comes at a time when the company is striving to catch up with competitors in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. Meta has achieved significant success with its Ray-Ban smart glasses, which have gained popularity among consumers. Additionally, OpenAI is collaborating with former Apple design chief Jony Ive to develop its own wearable devices, further intensifying the competition.
By investing in these innovative products, Apple aims to strengthen its ecosystem and enhance user experiences through advanced AI integration, positioning itself as a leader in the next wave of wearable technology.
