In the silk city of Berhampur, where day temperatures soar to 38°C, an elderly man is turning heads as he cycles comfortably through the streets. S Laxman Reddy, a health volunteer from Lanjipalli, has ingeniously crafted a lightweight and multipurpose temporary roof for his bicycle, spending only Rs 3,000.
How the Contraption Works
Reddy used steel rods, thin tin plates, thermocol sheets, and cloth to construct the roof. Side screens made from discarded flexi boards offer protection from rain. Remarkably, the roof can be flattened to serve as a bed for resting during long rides. “This contraption protects from rain too. Now, I cycle comfortably even in high day temperatures,” Reddy said.
Simple and Cost-Effective Design
Explaining the process, Reddy said, “I took only four to five hours to fix it after welding and fitting screws in a garage. The materials cost Rs 3,000. Before cycling, I sprinkle water on the roof, which gives a cool feel and reduces the heat effect.”
Inspiration Behind the Innovation
Reddy worked as a mobile tea-seller in the City Hospital area from 2016 to 2022. Covering his face with cloth did not provide relief from the scorching heat, which sparked his urge to innovate. Although he designed the roof two months ago, he could not complete it earlier due to a lack of funds.
Community Buzz
Reddy’s innovation has become a topic of discussion among Berhampur residents. While pedaling through the city, many people stop him to ask about the details and cost of his creation.
