Alaska, Not Hawaii, Has the Most Active Volcanoes in the US

Volcanoes rank among the most mysterious natural wonders on Earth. When thinking of dramatic volcanoes in the United States, Hawaii often comes to mind, home to famous volcanoes like Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. However, Hawaii is not the state with the highest number of active volcanoes. That distinction belongs to Alaska.

Alaska's Volcanic Landscape

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Alaska hosts the majority of America's active volcanoes. The state boasts over 130 volcanoes and volcanic fields that have been active within the past two million years. Many of these are concentrated along the Aleutian Islands, a remote chain stretching into the North Pacific Ocean.

Notable Volcanoes in Alaska

Mount Redoubt: Located about 170 kilometers from Anchorage, Mount Redoubt is one of Alaska's most active volcanoes. In 2009, it erupted, sending ash 15 kilometers into the sky and disrupting air traffic. On clear days, visitors can see the volcano from parts of south-central Alaska.
Mount Spurr: Situated west of Anchorage, this volcano is closely monitored. Its dramatic snow-covered summit makes it a striking sight.
Shishaldin Volcano: Found on Unimak Island in the Aleutians, Shishaldin is often compared to Japan's Mount Fuji. It is considered one of the most photogenic volcanoes in the world.
Augustine Volcano: Located in Cook Inlet, Augustine has produced many historical eruptions and is regarded as one of Alaska's most active volcanoes.

Hawaii's Volcanic Activity

In contrast, Hawaii surprisingly has only six active volcanoes, including Kīlauea, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, and Mauna Loa, the planet's largest active volcano.
