Baby Viper Captured at Kerala Hospital After Hours-Long Search

A baby viper was captured from the casualty section of Vithura taluk hospital on Wednesday morning, triggering concern among hospital staff, patients, and visitors for several hours.

Incident Details

According to hospital authorities, the snake was first spotted near the casualty counter. Staff members initially tried to catch the baby viper on their own to prevent panic among patients and bystanders. However, before they could capture it, the snake slipped into a small hole beneath the steps near the casualty block.

Response and Rescue

As the viper remained hidden inside the hole, staff covered the opening with cotton to ensure that it did not crawl out or move to other parts of the building. The authorities then informed the rapid response team (RRT) at Paruthipally seeking expert assistance. RRT member Roshini reached the hospital and carried out the rescue operation. After carefully removing the cotton placed over the opening, the rescuer managed to catch the viper. The snake was later handed over to the forest department for further procedures.

Inspection and Aftermath

Following the incident, a detailed inspection was conducted across the hospital premises and nearby surroundings amid concerns that more baby vipers could be present in the area. However, officials later confirmed that no other snakes were found.

Possible Cause

Officials said the intense summer heat could have forced the snake out of its natural habitat in search of cooler surroundings.
