The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for thunderstorms and hailstorms in Delhi and surrounding areas until June 13. The alert comes as a western disturbance is expected to affect the region, bringing with it strong winds, lightning, and potential hail.
Weather Alert Details
According to the IMD, the thunderstorm activity is likely to intensify from June 11 onwards, with peak intensity expected on June 12 and 13. The weather department has predicted gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h, accompanied by lightning and hail at isolated places.
The alert covers the national capital and its adjoining areas, including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during the storm and take precautions against lightning strikes.
Impact on Agriculture and Infrastructure
The hailstorm poses a risk to standing crops, particularly wheat and mustard, which are currently in their harvesting stage. Farmers have been advised to cover their crops or harvest early if possible. Additionally, the strong winds could cause damage to temporary structures, hoardings, and trees.
The IMD has also warned of possible waterlogging in low-lying areas due to the heavy downpour. Commuters are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm and to stay away from open fields and tall structures.
Previous Weather Patterns
Delhi has been experiencing unseasonal weather this year, with temperatures fluctuating between extreme heat and sudden cool spells. The current western disturbance is expected to bring relief from the heat, with maximum temperatures likely to drop by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next few days.
The IMD has urged residents to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and follow safety guidelines. Emergency services have been put on standby to handle any untoward incidents.
Safety Measures
- Avoid open areas and stay indoors during the storm.
- Do not take shelter under trees or near tall structures.
- Unplug electronic devices to prevent damage from lightning.
- Keep emergency numbers handy and report any damage to local authorities.
The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary. Residents are advised to check the IMD website or mobile app for real-time alerts.
