Karnataka's Minister for Revenue, Krishna Byre Gowda, has announced that the restoration of the Hebbal Lake wetland in Bengaluru is expected to be completed within a month. The project aims to revive the ecological balance of the lake and improve its capacity to manage floodwaters during heavy rains.
Restoration Progress and Features
The wetland restoration work involves desilting, removal of invasive species, and construction of a new embankment. The project also includes the creation of a walking path and a bird-watching tower to promote eco-tourism. Gowda inspected the site recently and expressed satisfaction with the progress.
Benefits of the Wetland
Once completed, the wetland is expected to enhance biodiversity, provide a habitat for migratory birds, and act as a natural sponge to absorb excess rainwater, reducing flooding in surrounding areas. The restored lake will also improve groundwater recharge and provide a recreational space for residents.
The minister emphasized the government's commitment to restoring all major lakes in Bengaluru to their original glory. Hebbal Lake is one of the largest in the city and has been a focal point of conservation efforts. The project is part of a broader initiative to rejuvenate urban water bodies under the Integrated Lake Management Plan.
Local residents have welcomed the development, hoping it will address long-standing issues of waterlogging and pollution. The completion of the wetland is anticipated to significantly boost the area's ecological health and quality of life.
