IMD Red Alert: Heavy Rain in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar; Trains Affected

Red Alert Issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts on July 1, 2026, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. The alert, valid for the next 24 hours, predicts rainfall exceeding 200 mm in isolated areas, leading to severe waterlogging and disruption of essential services.

Local Train Services Severely Affected

Due to the downpour, local train services on the Central Railway and Western Railway lines were significantly disrupted. Several trains were delayed or cancelled as water levels rose on tracks, particularly on the Central line between CST and Thane. According to a railway official, "At least 10 trains were cancelled and over 50 were delayed by more than 30 minutes as a precautionary measure." The Harbour line also experienced delays due to waterlogging at stations like Kurla and Vidyavihar.

Waterlogging and Traffic Jams

Heavy rain led to waterlogging in low-lying areas such as Hindmata, Sion, and Parel in Mumbai. Several roads were submerged, causing major traffic jams. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deployed pumps to drain water, but commuters faced long delays. In Thane, areas like Kolshet and Ghodbunder Road were also waterlogged, affecting vehicular movement.

Schools and Colleges Closed

In response to the red alert, the Maharashtra government declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar on July 1. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff. An official statement said, "All educational institutions will remain closed as a precautionary measure due to the heavy rainfall warning."

NDRF Teams Deployed

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed six teams in the affected districts for rescue and relief operations. The teams are stationed at vulnerable locations, including low-lying areas and landslide-prone zones. The state government has also kept emergency control rooms operational round the clock.

Flight Operations Affected

Flight operations at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were also impacted, with several flights delayed or diverted. The airport authority advised passengers to check with airlines before heading to the airport. Runway visibility dropped to 500 meters at times due to heavy rain.

Power Supply Disrupted

Intermittent power cuts were reported in several parts of Mumbai and Thane due to the rain. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) and Tata Power reported that they were working to restore supply, but cautioned that restoration may take time due to waterlogging and safety concerns.

Advice to Residents

The IMD and BMC have advised residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. People living in low-lying areas were urged to move to safer locations. The civic body also warned against venturing into waterlogged areas to avoid electrocution or accidents. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along the Maharashtra coast until July 2.

Weather Forecast

The IMD has predicted that the heavy rain would continue over the next 48 hours, with the red alert likely to be extended if conditions worsen. The monsoon trough is currently active over the Konkan region, leading to the intense rainfall. The weather department has also warned of possible landslides in hilly areas of Palghar and Thane.
