Kanpur Gets Respite as Thunderstorm Brings Down Temperature

Kanpur: The city experienced thunderstorms and rainfall on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, providing much-needed relief to residents who had been grappling with intense heat over the past ten days. On Friday, the mercury plummeted to 35.5 degrees Celsius, which is 5.4 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature during the night was recorded at 21.2 degrees Celsius, offering a comfortable reprieve. However, the rains elevated the maximum humidity level to 78 percent.

Pleasant Breezes and Weather Patterns

South-eastern winds blew through the city at speeds ranging from 9.8 to 13.8 kilometers per hour, creating a pleasant daytime atmosphere for Kanpurites. According to the weather forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Kanpur Division is likely to witness increased movement of thunderclouds on Saturday, accompanied by strong winds and a possibility of light rain.

Temperature Drop Expected

The IMD further anticipates a drop of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius in temperature this week. While this will provide some relief from the heat, humid conditions are expected to persist. Dr. S Sunil Pandey, a weather expert at CSA University, also predicted relief for Kanpurites in the coming days. He noted that the IMD had previously forecasted monsoon rainfall at 92% of the long-period average, but this estimate has now been revised downward to 90%. The IMD has stated that the 2026 monsoon is likely to be 'below normal'—that is, less than the average. A forecast of 90% could heighten concerns regarding agriculture, water reservoirs, and the rural economy.
