Heavy Rains Lash Malnad Region, Coastal Areas See Lull
Karnataka's Malnad region is experiencing relentless heavy showers, particularly in Sakleshpur taluk of Hassan district, leading to a significant rise in inflows into the Hemavathi reservoir at Goruru. The intensity of rainfall is notably lower in the coastal districts, according to a report by DHNS.
Hemavathi Reservoir Inflows Surge
The continuous downpour in Sakleshpur has pushed water levels in the Hemavathi reservoir, a key water source for the region. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as inflows increase. The reservoir serves irrigation and drinking water needs across Hassan and surrounding areas.
Coastal Districts See Reduced Activity
While the Malnad region is bearing the brunt of the monsoon, coastal districts like Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada have reported relatively lower rainfall intensity. This has provided some respite from potential flooding, though local administrations remain on alert.
Impact on Agriculture and Daily Life
The heavy rains have disrupted normal life in Sakleshpur and nearby areas, with waterlogging reported in low-lying regions. Farmers in the Malnad region, dependent on timely monsoons, have welcomed the rains for paddy and areca nut cultivation. However, excessive precipitation could lead to crop damage and soil erosion.
According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the rainfall in Malnad has been above average over the past 24 hours. The department has issued warnings for landslides in vulnerable areas. No casualties or major property damage have been reported so far.
Weather Forecast and Precautions
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued heavy rainfall in the Malnad region for the next 48 hours, with isolated very heavy showers possible. Coastal districts are expected to see light to moderate rain. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to stay vigilant, and fishing operations along the coast have been temporarily suspended.
The Hemavathi reservoir's water level is being closely tracked, and officials have assured that floodgates will be opened if necessary to manage excess inflows. The district administrations of Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga have been put on high alert.
