Karnataka Unveils 'Namma Guide' App to Transform Tourism
The Karnataka government has announced plans to launch a mobile application called 'Namma Guide' aimed at boosting tourism across the state. The initiative will integrate local guides into the digital ecosystem, enabling them to offer curated experiences while also taking on responsibilities for cleanliness and better management of tourist locations. According to an official statement, the app is expected to be rolled out within the next six months, with a pilot phase in select districts such as Mysuru, Hampi, and Coorg.
Key Features and Objectives
The 'Namma Guide' app will serve as a platform where tourists can book verified local guides, access real-time information about attractions, and provide feedback on their experiences. The government plans to onboard over 5,000 registered guides initially, with training programs focused on hospitality, safety protocols, and environmental stewardship. A senior tourism department official stated, 'This app will not only enhance the tourist experience but also create livelihood opportunities for local communities. Guides will be empowered to report maintenance issues, ensuring that our heritage sites remain pristine.'
Impact on Cleanliness and Management
In addition to guiding services, the app will include a feature for reporting cleanliness issues, such as littering or damaged facilities, directly to local authorities. The initiative aims to address long-standing concerns about waste management and overcrowding at popular destinations. According to the Karnataka Tourism Department, tourist footfall in the state increased by 12% in 2025, reaching 15 crore visitors, but complaints about hygiene have also risen by 8%. The app is expected to improve response times for maintenance and promote responsible tourism among visitors.
Implementation and Stakeholder Reactions
The project will be developed in collaboration with the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) and the Department of Information Technology. A budget of ₹5 crore has been allocated for the app's development and initial rollout. Local guide associations have welcomed the move, with the Karnataka Tour Guides Association stating that 'the app provides a much-needed formal recognition and income stability for guides, who often work informally.' However, some stakeholders have raised concerns about digital literacy among older guides and the need for offline functionality in remote areas.
Expected Benefits for Karnataka Tourism
The 'Namma Guide' app is part of a broader strategy to position Karnataka as a top-tier global destination. The state is home to UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Hampi and Pattadakal, as well as wildlife sanctuaries and hill stations. By leveraging technology, the government hopes to increase tourist spending by 15% and extend average stay durations. The app will also feature multilingual support, including English, Hindi, Kannada, and select international languages, to cater to domestic and foreign tourists alike.
