Kerala Braces for Heavy Pre-Monsoon Rains, Yellow Alert

Kochi: Pre-monsoon showers continue to provide relief from the scorching heat and help lower temperatures across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall at isolated places in Kerala until Saturday.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast

Ernakulam and Thrissur are very likely to receive heavy rainfall on Wednesday. On Thursday, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki are expected to experience heavy downpours. Alappuzha, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode are likely to see heavy rain on Friday, while Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam are forecast to receive heavy rainfall on Saturday. A thunderstorm warning for the state will remain in effect until May 11.

Recorded Rainfall

A significant amount of rainfall was recorded on Tuesday in Kozhikode, Idukki, Wayanad, Kannur, Malappuram, and Palakkad. According to the IMD, very heavy rainfall of 17 cm was recorded between 4 pm and 6 pm at Urumi in Kozhikode. Kalpetta in Wayanad recorded 5 cm of rain. The maximum temperature on Tuesday was 37.5 degrees Celsius in Punalur, followed by Palakkad with 37 degrees Celsius.

UV Radiation Alert

Even as the state received pre-monsoon rainfall at many places on Tuesday, rising ultraviolet radiation was witnessed, with six districts placed on orange alert. The maximum UV index of 9 was reported in Munnar, the highest of the day. Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode were on orange alert for high UV index due to clear skies.
