Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has once again underscored the strength of Russia-India ties, describing the relationship as a 'privileged strategic partnership' that spans critical sectors including defence and space exploration. Speaking at a press conference, Lavrov lauded the bilateral cooperation, emphasizing that it is based on mutual trust and respect, free from external interference.
Defence Cooperation
Lavrov highlighted the ongoing collaboration in defence, noting that Russia remains a key supplier of military equipment to India. He pointed out that joint projects, such as the production of AK-203 assault rifles and the S-400 air defence system, are progressing smoothly. 'Our defence partnership is a cornerstone of regional stability,' Lavrov stated, adding that it contributes to the balance of power in Asia.
Space Collaboration
The Russian minister also praised the space cooperation between the two nations, referencing the successful joint missions and training of Indian astronauts. 'We are proud to be part of India's space programme, including the Gaganyaan mission,' he said. Lavrov expressed optimism about future projects, such as the development of satellite navigation systems and deep-space exploration.
Criticism of Western Interference
Lavrov did not mince words when addressing global instability, blaming Western nations for meddling in the internal affairs of sovereign states. 'The West's attempts to impose its own rules have led to chaos in many regions,' he asserted. He specifically called out NATO's expansion and the imposition of unilateral sanctions as factors undermining international security. 'Russia and India share a vision of a multipolar world order based on the UN Charter,' Lavrov added.
Economic Ties and Energy
Beyond defence and space, Lavrov touched upon economic cooperation, particularly in energy. He noted that Russia is a reliable partner in supplying oil and gas to India, with bilateral trade expected to reach new heights. 'Our energy partnership is mutually beneficial and helps stabilize global markets,' he said.
Multilateral Forums
Lavrov also emphasized the importance of platforms like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in fostering dialogue among emerging economies. 'These forums allow us to coordinate on issues of common interest without outside pressure,' he remarked.
In conclusion, Lavrov reaffirmed Russia's commitment to deepening ties with India across all domains, dismissing any notion of strain due to external factors. 'Our friendship is time-tested and will continue to flourish,' he asserted.
