A significant earthquake measuring magnitude 5.8 on the Richter scale struck Bhutan late on Sunday night, generating multiple aftershocks and sending tremors across several parts of Northeast India, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The seismic event occurred at 11:06 PM Indian Standard Time (IST) at a depth of 26 kilometers, with its epicenter located in Bhutan. The epicenter was approximately 252 kilometers from certain areas of Assam, and tremors were felt in numerous locations throughout India's northeastern region following the quake.
Details of the Earthquake
The NCS provided specific coordinates for the earthquake, stating it occurred at latitude 27.627 N and longitude 89.660 E. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the agency confirmed, "EQ of M: 5.8, On: 07/06/2026 23:06:43 IST, Lat: 27.627 N, Long: 89.660 E, Depth: 26 Km, Location: Bhutan." The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) also reported the earthquake, estimating its magnitude at 5.6 and noting a shallower depth of 10 kilometers.
Aftershocks and Seismic Activity
The main tremor was followed by a series of aftershocks, indicating ongoing seismic activity in the region. The first aftershock, with a magnitude of 2.8, was recorded at 11:18:43 PM IST, approximately 12 minutes after the initial earthquake. The NCS reported that this aftershock occurred at a depth of 22 kilometers, with its epicenter at latitude 27.580 N and longitude 89.821 E. A second aftershock of magnitude 2.4 was recorded at 11:52 PM IST, originating at a depth of 18 kilometers, making it shallower than both the main earthquake and the earlier aftershock.
The sequence of tremors occurred within less than an hour of the initial earthquake, with magnitudes declining from 5.8 to 2.8 and then 2.4. The recorded depths of these seismic events ranged between 18 kilometers and 26 kilometers, according to NCS data. The NCS continued to monitor the seismic activity and issued updates through its social media channels.
Impact and Response
No immediate reports of casualties or damage were available at the time of reporting. Authorities and seismological agencies are closely monitoring the situation to assess any potential impact. The tremors were felt across parts of Northeast India, prompting caution among residents. The NCS and other agencies remain vigilant, providing timely updates to ensure public safety.
