Navi Mumbai: Environmentalists are calling for the revival of neighbouring wetlands as NRI Lake witnesses significant gatherings of flamingos. With visitors arriving from neighbouring cities, NRI Lake has emerged as an unofficial eco-tourism hotspot, according to the NatConnect Foundation. The foundation has urged the state government to revive all three wetlands in the area for the benefit of migratory birds and nature enthusiasts.
Eco-Tourism Potential
The increasing flamingo population at NRI Lake has drawn attention to the ecological importance of the region. Environmentalists believe that proper conservation and revival of wetlands could boost eco-tourism, providing economic benefits to local communities while protecting biodiversity.
Call for Government Action
NatConnect Foundation has appealed to the Maharashtra government to take immediate steps to restore the wetlands. They emphasize that these areas serve as critical habitats for migratory birds like flamingos and play a vital role in maintaining the local ecosystem.
The revival efforts would involve cleaning, desilting, and ensuring a steady water supply to the wetlands. Environmentalists also recommend regulated tourism to minimize human disturbance to bird populations.
Community Support
Local residents and nature enthusiasts have expressed support for the revival plan. Many believe that eco-tourism could create job opportunities and promote environmental awareness. However, they stress the need for sustainable practices to avoid harming the delicate ecological balance.
The state government has not yet officially responded to the proposal, but environmental groups remain hopeful that the growing public interest will spur action.
