Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next two to three days. This comes ahead of the monsoon onset, which is likely by the first week of June. A yellow alert has also been issued for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura for Monday.
Orange and Yellow Alerts in Place
The orange alert for Assam and Meghalaya remains active until Wednesday, prompting disaster management authorities to prepare for potential emergencies. For Tuesday, a yellow warning is in place for Arunachal Pradesh, though rain is likely to subside in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. According to the IMD, fairly widespread to widespread, light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely in Assam and Meghalaya on Monday.
Isolated Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall Expected
The Met office warned of isolated heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh until Tuesday, Assam and Meghalaya until May 29, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on Monday, May 29, and May 30. Isolated very heavy rainfall is also likely over Arunachal Pradesh on Monday and in Assam and Meghalaya until May 27. As per IMD data, heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) was recorded at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday.
Impact on Guwahati and Surrounding Districts
The IMD on Sunday predicted the likelihood of thunderstorms and lightning with heavy to very heavy rain and gusty winds over the coming two to three days at isolated places in Guwahati city, along with southern and western districts of the state. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) issued a statement on Sunday saying, “The weather pattern suggests that thunderstorms and lightning with few spells of rain are very likely at the isolated places of the city, along with southern and western districts of the state in coming 2 to 3 days, which may aggravate waterlogging, slow vehicular movement and increase the risk of localised landslides in vulnerable pockets.”
Advisory for Commuters and Residents
Daily commuters and long-distance travelers have been requested to plan their routines accordingly. Authorities advise staying indoors during severe weather, avoiding waterlogged areas, and being cautious on roads. The ASDMA is on high alert to respond to any emergencies arising from the adverse weather conditions.
