Rajasthan is reeling under an intense heatwave, with the desert city of Barmer sizzling at 45.4 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature recorded in the state this season. The mercury has crossed the 44-degree mark in several other cities, including Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Churu, as a severe heatwave grips the region.
Current Temperature Scenario
According to the Meteorological Department, Barmer recorded a maximum temperature of 45.4°C, followed by Jodhpur at 44.8°C, Bikaner at 44.6°C, and Churu at 44.2°C. Other cities like Jaipur, Ajmer, and Udaipur also witnessed temperatures above 40°C. The minimum temperatures have also remained above normal, providing little relief during the night.
Heatwave Alert
The weather department has issued a heatwave alert for several districts, predicting that the intense heat conditions are likely to persist for the next two to three days. An orange alert has been sounded for Barmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Churu, indicating a high probability of heatwave conditions. Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing.
Impact on Daily Life
The scorching heat has severely impacted daily life in Rajasthan. Schools in several districts have been ordered to remain closed or operate on a half-day schedule to protect children from the heat. Outdoor workers, including laborers and farmers, are facing the brunt, with many forced to halt work during the afternoon hours. The demand for electricity has surged as people rely on air conditioners and coolers to beat the heat, leading to power cuts in some areas.
Health Advisory
Health officials have warned of an increased risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, dehydration, and sunburn. Hospitals have been instructed to keep emergency services ready. The public has been urged to avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day and to keep an eye on the elderly and children, who are more vulnerable to heat stress.
Weather Forecast
The Meteorological Department has forecast that the heatwave conditions will continue over the next 48 hours, with temperatures likely to remain above 44°C in most parts of western Rajasthan. However, a slight drop in temperature is expected after three days due to the possibility of a western disturbance affecting the region. No significant rainfall is predicted in the immediate future.
Rajasthan has been experiencing above-normal temperatures since the beginning of March, with several heatwave spells already recorded. The state typically witnesses its hottest period in May and June, but early heatwaves have become more frequent in recent years, attributed to climate change and changing weather patterns.
