A powerful storm swept through several villages near Abohar in Punjab's Fazilka district on Tuesday evening, causing widespread damage. The storm uprooted solar panels installed on rooftops, damaged electricity poles, and destroyed crops in the affected areas.
Impact on Solar Panels and Infrastructure
The storm, accompanied by strong winds and rain, struck villages including Jandwala, Chak Khere Wala, and Rorian. In Jandwala, solar panels installed under a government scheme were blown off rooftops and smashed. Several electricity poles were uprooted, leading to power outages in the region. Trees were also uprooted, blocking roads and disrupting traffic.
Damage to Agriculture
Farmers reported significant damage to their crops, particularly cotton and paddy, which were flattened by the storm. The extent of the loss is being assessed by the agriculture department. Many farmers expressed concern over the financial impact, as the crops were nearing harvest.
No casualties or injuries have been reported so far. Local authorities, including the police and revenue department, have started a survey to assess the damage. Teams have been deployed to clear roads and restore power supply. Officials said compensation would be provided to affected families as per government norms.
Residents described the storm as sudden and intense, lasting for about 20 minutes. Many took shelter in their homes as the wind howled. The meteorological department has warned of more thunderstorms in the region over the next few days.
