A pack of stray dogs attacked a livestock pen and killed 15 sheep near Vellakoil in Tirupur on Friday. The affected farmer has demanded immediate compensation from the state government, while local farmers have urged the authorities to control the growing stray dog menace in the locality.
Incident Details
According to officials, the incident took place at a farm owned by V M Gunasekaran, 52, of Sivannathapuram West Thottam near Vellakoil. He has been rearing around 80 sheep on his farm for several years alongside regular agriculture. As usual, he had secured his sheep in their pen at night. However, when Gunasekaran visited his farm the following morning, he was shocked to find that stray dogs had mauled the flock. Eleven sheep were found dead on the spot, four were critically injured, and one sheep went missing after being chased away by the dogs.
Response and Aftermath
On being alerted, revenue department officials visited the spot and conducted an inquiry. A veterinary doctor performed postmortem examinations on the dead sheep and administered emergency treatment to the injured ones. However, the four injured sheep also succumbed to injuries, bringing the total death toll to 15.
Farmers' Demands
Local farmers expressed distress over the incident, stating that such gruesome attacks have become a recurring nightmare and are threatening the survival of livestock farmers. They demanded that fair compensation based on the current market value be provided for all 15 dead sheep. They also insisted that the compensation amount be directly credited to the farmer's bank account through the electronic clearing services (ECS) within 30 days of the incident.
