Trichy: As part of World Migratory Bird Day observed on May 9, the Trichy district forest department organized a workshop for college students on Saturday to deepen their understanding of unique migratory birds and their vital roles in ecosystems, including pollination and seed dispersal. The event was led by Forest Range Officer J Ravi.
Field Visit and Learning Activities
Students participated in a field visit to spot common migratory birds at Nalanda Agriculture College near the MR Palayam reserve forest area. During the session, officials emphasized the necessity of protecting the habitats and breeding grounds of migratory birds. Over 100 college students were sensitized about various types of migratory birds, their origins, and their remarkable intercontinental journeys.
Identification and Behavior Insights
The workshop covered techniques for identifying migratory birds. Students learned about the birds' food intake, reasons for making pit stops during intercontinental journeys at prominent bird sanctuaries such as Karaivetti in Ariyalur and Point Calimere in Nagapattinam, and the different calls made by common migratory birds. Rare and endangered bird species were also discussed.
