Two Gaddi Dogs Registered with Indian National Kennel Club

Two indigenous Gaddi dogs, also known as Himalayan sheepdogs, have been officially registered with the Indian National Kennel Club (INKC). The dogs, named Scooby and Putty, belong to Dr GC Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh.

Project Leader Calls Registration a Significant Achievement

Prof Shivani Katoch, who has been spearheading the project to promote and conserve the indigenous breed for nearly a decade, described the development as a significant achievement. “The registration will help further promote the indigenous breed. Now, Gaddi dogs can participate in dog shows and other activities conducted by the club,” said Dr Katoch. She added that Gaddi dog breeders would be able to secure better prices for their dogs following the registration.

Official Recognition and International Efforts

The Gaddi dog was officially recognised as an indigenous breed by ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources last year. Prof Katoch noted that efforts are now underway to secure international recognition. “The process takes around three to four years,” she said. The breed’s features have been clearly defined to prevent misrepresentation. “Some of the defining features include a black, hairy coat, spots above the eyes, males weighing around 40-45 kg, and a generally robust build,” she explained.

Conservation and Support

Gaddi dogs have been associated with shepherds for centuries, protecting herds of goats and sheep. However, crossbreeding has diluted the pure line over the years. “We intend to preserve and strengthen the Gaddi dog line,” said Prof Katoch. The project has been funded by the Department of Animal Husbandry. Former Himachal Chief Secretary Vineet Chaudhary also extended significant support to the initiative.
