Deadly Russian Strikes Hit Ukraine
At least 22 people were killed in a new wave of Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, officials reported on Monday. The attacks, which targeted several regions including the capital Kyiv, have put immense strain on the country's already stretched air defense systems. Emergency services worked through the night to rescue survivors and clear debris from residential buildings and infrastructure.
Kyiv Under Fire
In Kyiv, explosions were heard in multiple districts as air defense systems engaged incoming threats. Debris from intercepted missiles fell on a residential area, causing fires and damaging buildings. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed casualties and urged residents to stay in shelters. The strikes come as Ukraine faces a critical shortage of interceptor missiles and air defense systems, prompting urgent appeals to Western allies for more support.
Wider Impact Across the Country
Other cities, including Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Odesa, also reported strikes. In Kharkiv, a missile hit a shopping center, killing several people and injuring dozens. The attacks have disrupted power and water supplies in some areas, compounding the hardships of war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, calling them "deliberate terror" and reiterating the need for advanced air defense systems like Patriot batteries.
Growing Pressure on Air Defenses
Military analysts note that Russia has intensified its aerial campaign, exploiting gaps in Ukraine's air defense coverage. The use of decoys and saturation tactics aims to overwhelm systems. Ukraine's defense ministry stated that while they intercepted a significant number of missiles, the sheer volume of attacks is unsustainable. The country urgently requires additional systems and ammunition from its partners to maintain protection of critical infrastructure and civilian areas.
The international community has condemned the latest attacks, with the United Nations calling for an immediate halt to hostilities. The United States and European Union have pledged further military aid, but deliveries have been slow. As the war enters its third year, the resilience of Ukraine's air defense network remains a key factor in the conflict's trajectory.
