Andhra Pradesh to Purchase High-Speed Boats to Curb Tamil Nadu Fishermen Intrusion
The Nellore district administration in Andhra Pradesh has announced plans to acquire high-speed mechanised boats to address the alleged intrusion of Tamil Nadu fishermen into the state's coastal waters. This decision follows years of tension and frequent clashes between local fisherfolk and their counterparts from Tamil Nadu, which have adversely impacted the livelihoods of Andhra Pradesh's fishing communities.
Background of the Conflict
According to TDP MP Beeda Masthan Rao, fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been entering Andhra Pradesh's coastline using high-speed mechanised boats for several decades. This has led to recurring conflicts with local fishermen and significant economic losses. Recently, an incident escalated into a major controversy when agitated local fishermen captured four Tamil Nadu boats for allegedly violating fishing regulations near Krishnapuram in Indukurpet mandal and Chennayapalem in Kavali mandal of Nellore district.
The captured boats were tied at Juvvaladinne port for nearly eight months. Their subsequent release triggered massive protests by local fishermen, prompting the district administration and the Andhra Pradesh government to seek long-term solutions to the problem.
Government Response and Measures
In response to the growing unrest, the Andhra Pradesh fisheries authorities have reportedly communicated the matter to officials in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, urging them to contain poaching activities from their end. Meanwhile, the state government has intensified monitoring along the coastline and deployed special patrol teams at sea to prevent the entry of mechanised boats from neighbouring states.
Masthan Rao emphasised that the absence of larger mechanised boats along the Andhra Pradesh coast has been a key factor enabling frequent poaching. He noted that such boats would allow local fishermen to venture deeper into the sea and remain there for longer periods, resulting in improved fish catch and better income opportunities. He submitted a representation to Union Minister of State for Fisheries SP Singh Baghel, seeking intervention to curb the entry of mechanised boats from Karaikal into Andhra waters.
Long-Term Solutions
The Nellore district administration's decision to purchase high-speed mechanised boats is part of a broader strategy to protect the interests of local fishermen and ensure sustainable fishing practices. By enhancing the capabilities of local fishermen, the government aims to reduce dependence on traditional boats and minimise conflicts with Tamil Nadu fishermen.
These measures are expected to restore peace along the coastline and provide a stable environment for fishing communities in Andhra Pradesh.
