Bengal Plans International Gangasagar Mela: CM

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Thursday that the state government plans to transform the Gangasagar Mela into an international event. He stated that the central government has agreed to a proposal to beautify the coastal area around the Kapil Muni temple and restore the shoreline. Additionally, the Centre will carry out dredging operations around Gangasagar Island to improve accessibility and infrastructure.

Details of the Announcement

During a press conference, CM Adhikari emphasized the cultural and religious significance of the Gangasagar Mela, which attracts millions of pilgrims annually. He noted that the event currently lacks global recognition despite its scale. The proposed international status would involve enhanced facilities, better crowd management, and promotional campaigns targeting international tourists.

Beautification and Shoreline Restoration

The beautification project includes landscaping, construction of viewing platforms, and installation of lighting near the Kapil Muni temple. The shoreline restoration aims to prevent erosion and create a cleaner beach environment. These efforts are expected to boost local tourism and generate economic opportunities for the region.

Dredging Operations

Dredging around Gangasagar Island is intended to deepen the surrounding waterways, making it easier for boats and ferries to dock. This will improve connectivity for pilgrims and reduce travel time. The central government has allocated funds for this initiative under the Sagarmala project.

CM Adhikari also mentioned that the state government will work closely with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to ensure timely execution. The timeline for these projects is yet to be announced, but preparations are expected to begin within the next financial year.

The Gangasagar Mela, held annually at the confluence of the Ganges and the Bay of Bengal, is one of the largest religious gatherings in India. With the planned upgrades, the state aims to position it alongside other major international pilgrimage events.
