Bengaluru Airport Hits 44.47M Passengers in 2025-26

Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport achieved a milestone in the 2025-26 fiscal year, handling a total of 44.47 million passengers, buoyed by a significant increase in international travel. According to data released by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), overall passenger traffic rose by 6.2% compared to the previous year.

International Traffic Surges

International passenger numbers soared by 23.9% to reach 7.23 million, reflecting strong demand for overseas travel from the city. This growth outpaced domestic traffic, which saw a more modest increase of 3.3% to 37.24 million passengers. The combined figures underscore the airport's role as a major hub in southern India.

Factors Driving Growth

BIAL attributed the robust international performance to the addition of new routes and increased flight frequencies by airlines. The expansion of direct connectivity to destinations in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe has been particularly impactful. Additionally, the resurgence of business travel and tourism post-pandemic has contributed to the higher numbers.

Domestic travel, while growing at a slower pace, remained the backbone of the airport's operations, accounting for over 83% of total traffic. The introduction of new regional connections and competitive pricing by carriers helped sustain domestic demand.

Infrastructure and Future Plans

To accommodate the rising passenger volume, BIAL has been investing in infrastructure upgrades. The airport's second runway and expanded terminal facilities have enhanced capacity. Plans for further expansion are underway, including the development of a new terminal to handle projected growth over the next decade.

The airport's performance in 2025-26 aligns with the broader trend of increasing air travel in India, driven by a growing economy and rising disposable incomes. BIAL officials expressed optimism about sustaining growth, with international traffic expected to continue its upward trajectory.
