Ranchi: The Birsa Munda Airport has witnessed a remarkable four-fold increase in annual passenger traffic over the past 12 years, soaring from approximately 6.5 lakh in 2014-15 to nearly 27 lakh in 2025-26, officials confirmed.
Economic Growth and Connectivity
"This growth reflects the rising economic activities, trade, tourism and improved air connectivity in Jharkhand," said airport director Vinod Kumar on Saturday. He noted that over the last 12 years, the airport has achieved significant progress in passenger traffic, financial performance, infrastructural development, and flyer amenities.
Financial Performance
The surge in passengers has translated into strong fiscal gains year-on-year. The airport registered a profit of Rs 49.21 crore in 2023-24, which climbed to Rs 64.60 crore in 2024-25, before reaching Rs 87.56 crore in 2025-26.
Infrastructure Upgrades
To accommodate the growing footfall, the airport underwent extensive infrastructure upgrades. Recent additions include a new air traffic control (ATC) tower, a DVOR (Doppler VHF Omni Range) navigation system, an instrument landing system (ILS), an expanded apron and security area, passenger boarding bridges, and modernized amenities.
Passenger Facilities
New facilities such as a UDAN passenger cafe, a kids' play zone, a cultural feature wall, and an AVSAR outlet have been introduced. "The AVSAR (Airports as Venues for Skilled Artisans of the Region) initiative provides a platform for local craftsmen to display artworks like Sohrai and Khovar, gaining national recognition," said Kumar.
Environmental Initiatives
Environmental protection is promoted through solar and green energy, energy-efficient LED lighting, electric vehicles, plantation drives, and water and energy conservation efforts.
Yatri Suvidha Diwas
The airport will observe ‘Yatri Suvidha Diwas’ (Passenger Amenity Day) on June 15. "The event will feature various programs to enhance passenger convenience, public awareness, social responsibility, environmental protection, and promotion of local culture," Kumar said.
The program includes a traditional welcome for arrivals with tilak, roses, and chocolates, along with dedicated selfie points and photo booths. Environmental initiatives will involve plantation, sapling distribution, and cleanliness drives on the premises, parking lots, and approach roads.
Jharkhand’s heritage will be showcased through Chhau dance, local art, and handicraft exhibitions. Other activities include painting and quiz competitions for children, an airport familiarization program for meritorious students, and a passenger feedback campaign.
