The BRICS technical meeting of the Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group, hosted under India's BRICS Presidency, will take place in Puri from June 3 to 5. Representatives and specialists from BRICS nations will gather to discuss disaster management, resilience measures, and international collaboration. Delegations from countries including Brazil, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the UAE, and China are expected to participate.
Odisha Chosen for Its Disaster Preparedness
According to a government statement issued on Monday, Odisha was selected to host the meeting due to its strong track record in disaster preparedness and response. The statement highlighted the state's internationally recognized cyclone management, community-based early warning systems, and effective rescue and evacuation efforts.
Objectives of the Meeting
The meeting is expected to facilitate knowledge-sharing among participating countries, encourage dialogue on emerging technologies and coordinated strategies, and deepen cooperation on disaster risk reduction. The government statement added that hosting the event in Puri will also help showcase Odisha's disaster management capabilities on a global platform and strengthen the state's international profile.
