Ahmedabad: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project achieved a significant milestone with the completion of a viaduct span over the Kalupur flyover in Ahmedabad. This flyover is a crucial railway overbridge on the Western Railway's Sabarmati-Mumbai main line.
Project Details
Officials from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) confirmed that the viaduct, aligned parallel to the existing railway track, was erected using the span-by-span method. The 45-meter bridge span was placed over the flyover, rising approximately 19.5 meters from ground to rail level. The span was assembled from 19 segments, with the completed structure weighing around 1,200 metric tonnes.
Traffic Management
The Kalupur flyover is one of Ahmedabad's busiest two-lane links, connecting Shahibaug, Asarwa, and Kalupur, and carrying thousands of commuters daily. The completion of this span is expected to prevent prolonged traffic diversions on this corridor. By limiting disruptions to short, pre-planned night closures rather than extended daytime restrictions, the project minimizes inconvenience for commuters.
Execution Process
The span erection was carried out under a controlled night block from midnight to 6 am. Entry and exit points within the work zone were fully closed during those hours, while normal traffic was restored during the day. Permissions were secured for May 22-25, and the auto-launching, segment transport, erection, dry matching, and glueing were completed in three nights, officials added.
Progress in Ahmedabad District
In Ahmedabad district, the bullet train corridor crosses 31 locations, out of which 23 have been completed. This achievement marks steady progress in the ambitious high-speed rail project, which aims to connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad with a travel time of under three hours.
