Travellers entering Chennai from Andhra Pradesh via Gummidipoondi receive a poor welcome to the city, with the NH-16 stretch till Madhavaram lacking even basic roadside amenities. The entry point near the toll plaza does not have proper eateries, cafes, or restrooms, leaving motorists with little option for a break after long drives.
Lack of Facilities
Tourists heading to waterfalls in Tada, Nagalapuram, and Nagari, as well as those entering Chennai, must rely on Red Hills town for food. The restrooms in the toll plaza are also in bad shape. Truck congestion, without parking bays, pushes commuters to continue their drive without any prospect to pull over.
Though there are some restaurants in Red Hills, there is no parking space for cars on the narrow road. This forces many to drive 10 kilometres to Madhavaram to find a restaurant. The absence of basic amenities has been a persistent issue for travellers using this route.
Impact on Travellers
The lack of proper facilities not only causes inconvenience but also raises safety concerns. Motorists, especially those on long journeys, need rest stops to avoid fatigue. The current situation leaves them with few options, often leading to extended driving times and increased risk of accidents.
Local authorities have been urged to address these shortcomings. Improved amenities, including clean restrooms, well-maintained eateries, and designated parking areas, are essential for a welcoming entry into the city. Until then, travellers must plan their breaks carefully, relying on Red Hills or Madhavaram for basic needs.
