Dry Spell Expected in Northwest India from June 20
After days of intermittent showers, a dry spell is set to begin over northwest India starting June 20. However, day temperatures in Punjab and Haryana, which are currently normal for this time of year, are not expected to increase significantly, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Weather Forecast for the Coming Days
Light to moderate rain is likely at isolated places until June 23, with no major change in maximum temperatures expected in the next 48 hours. After that, temperatures may drop by 2-3 degrees Celsius for two days before rising again. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also possible at isolated locations during this period.
Recent Temperature and Rainfall Data
In the past 24 hours, Punjab recorded its highest maximum temperature at 39.5 degrees Celsius in Patiala, while the lowest minimum was 23 degrees Celsius at Thein Dam. In Haryana, Rohtak saw the highest maximum at 40.9 degrees Celsius, with Narnaul recording the lowest minimum at 24 degrees Celsius.
During this period, Haryana experienced dry weather, while isolated light rain occurred in parts of Punjab, including Gurdaspur, Pathankot, and Sangrur.
Rainfall Deficiency
Rainfall for June so far, which was initially surplus, has dropped below the long period average (LPA) in both states. From June 1 to 20, Punjab received 21.8 mm against an LPA of 28.2 mm, a deficiency of 23%. Haryana recorded 27 mm against an LPA of 29.4 mm, a shortfall of 8%.
Weather Systems and Impact
The IMD reports that a seasonal trough extends from Punjab to Bihar in lower atmospheric levels, while a western disturbance prevails over north Punjab and its surroundings. These systems are expected to bring fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, along with isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 60 kmph over Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh until June 22. Scattered rainfall is likely from June 23 to 26, with isolated hailstorms possible on June 21.
