An explosion and subsequent fire at a defence company in South Korea on Monday resulted in the deaths of five people and injuries to two others, according to officials. The tragic incident occurred at a worksite operated by Hanwha Aerospace in the city of Daejeon.
Details of the Incident
Specific details, including the cause of the explosion, have not yet been released. Emergency official Yoon Seong-su stated that the area is a government-designated security facility. Local medical official Kim Ju-yeon reported that one of the two injured individuals is in critical condition. Authorities have not yet identified the deceased.
Hanwha Aerospace Facility
According to Yonhap news agency, the site is one of Hanwha Aerospace's key facilities, where the company develops large-sized propellants and surface-to-surface weapons systems. The company is a major defence contractor in South Korea.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to prevent future incidents.
