A French Air Force Rafale fighter jet deployed under NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission intercepted and destroyed a Ukrainian military drone after it crossed into Latvian airspace, highlighting how the war in Ukraine is increasingly affecting neighboring NATO states.
Incident Details
According to Latvian authorities and NATO officials, the unmanned aircraft entered Latvia from the direction of Russia before being tracked and neutralized near the village of Berzgale in eastern Latvia, roughly 30 kilometers from the Russian border.
Broader Implications
Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, several NATO countries bordering the conflict zone—including Poland, Romania and Latvia—have experienced incidents involving drones, missile fragments or unidentified aerial objects entering their territory.
The spread of drone warfare beyond active battlefields is forcing militaries to rethink both doctrine and resources.
