According to police reports released on Friday, the disaster struck when a towering pile of waste and debris at the landfill gave way without warning. The avalanche of rubbish buried workers who were on site at the time. Twelve individuals were successfully pulled out alive from under the garbage, but they sustained various injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.
Tragically, the rescue efforts could not save everyone. Regional police director Brigadier General Roderick Maranan confirmed to the Associated Press that one of the rescued women, a landfill employee, succumbed to her injuries while being transported to the hospital.
