The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is planning to organize a summer sports coaching camp for children in the city in collaboration with the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP). Training will be provided in 33 sports disciplines, including athletics, ball badminton, bodybuilding, badminton, basketball, boxing, chess, taekwondo, table tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, and yoga.
Preparation Meeting Held
The GVMC recently held a meeting to discuss preparations for the camp. Vizag West MLA and government whip PGV R. Naidu, district sports development officer R. June Gallyot Rodrigues, and representatives of various sports associations attended the meeting. GVMC officials requested sports associations to submit details of available sports grounds in the city, names of qualified coaches, and expected participation in various disciplines. Suggestions were also sought on the diet to be provided to trainees.
Camp Duration and Facilities
Officials said the duration of the camps would be finalized after discussions with the commissioner. Later, the MLA, who attended the meeting as a representative of sports associations, said the camps would offer training in sports, arts, and other creative fields during the summer holidays. He suggested preparing plans for coaching in sports, yoga, painting, and cultural activities. He also asked officials to ensure basic facilities such as drinking water and shade at camp venues in view of the summer heat.
Camps After Two-Year Gap
District sports development officer R. June Gallyot Rodrigues said that SAAP would extend full support and work jointly with the GVMC for the successful conduct of the camps. Representatives of various sports associations stressed the need to provide quality food to trainees and ensure the availability of standard sports equipment. Pointing out that such camps had not been held in the city for the past two years, they said extensive publicity was needed to ensure greater participation this year. Former GVMC corporators Palla Srinivasa Rao and Gandham Srinivasa Rao assured their full support for the successful conduct of the camps.
