A severe heat wave has engulfed Punjab and Chandigarh, with temperatures soaring above 42 degrees Celsius in several regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, warning residents to take precautions against the extreme heat. The maximum temperature in Chandigarh touched 43.2°C on Wednesday, while Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Patiala recorded temperatures of 44.1°C, 43.5°C, and 42.8°C, respectively.
Current Heat Wave Conditions
The heat wave has disrupted daily life, with schools in several districts adjusting timings and outdoor workers facing health risks. The IMD attributes the intense heat to the absence of any active western disturbance and the prevalence of dry northwesterly winds. The mercury is expected to remain above normal for the next few days.
Health Advisory Issued
Health departments have advised residents to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (12 PM to 4 PM), stay hydrated, and wear light clothing. Hospitals have been put on alert to handle heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and dehydration. The Chandigarh administration has also opened cooling centers in public places.
Relief Likely After April 28
The IMD has forecast that a fresh western disturbance is likely to impact the region from April 28, bringing possible thundershowers and a significant drop in temperatures. The relief is expected to be short-lived, but it may provide respite from the scorching heat. The weather department has advised farmers to monitor crop conditions as the sudden change could affect standing wheat and horticulture.
Residents are urged to follow official updates and take necessary precautions until the heat wave subsides. The authorities are coordinating with disaster management teams to ensure quick response to any emergency.
