Flights Diverted and Delayed at Shah Amanat International Airport
Heavy rainfall in southern Bangladesh has caused significant disruptions to air and rail travel. At Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram, at least three flights were unable to land due to poor weather conditions. These flights were diverted to the capital, Dhaka. Additionally, flights scheduled from Dhaka to Chattogram could not operate, leading to widespread delays across the affected routes.
Railway Line Submerged, Train Stranded
The railway line connecting Chattogram to Cox's Bazar, a popular tourist destination, has been submerged under at least two feet of water at several points. A tourist train departing from Chattogram has been stuck at the city station since 1 p.m. local time, leaving approximately 600 passengers stranded. Train services on this route have been halted indefinitely due to the flooding.
Tourists Stranded in Bandarban District
In the hilly district of Bandarban, continuous heavy rainfall has led to flooding at multiple tourist spots, stranding many visitors. In response, the Bandarban district administration has issued an urgent public notice prohibiting tourist movement throughout the entire district until further notice, but at least until Friday, July 10, 2026.
The notice states: "This is for the information of the general public that due to continuous heavy rainfall recently in Bandarban Hill District, potential risks have arisen across communication systems in various locations. Considering the current weather conditions and potential risks, and in order to ensure the safety of lives and properties of tourists and the general public, all tourist centers in Bandarban Hill District are declared closed until next July 10, 2026 (Friday)."
Government Urges Compliance with Safety Directives
The administration further clarified: "During this period, travel by tourists, tour operators, and the general public to all tourist centers, waterfalls, mountain trails, river routes, remote areas, and risky locations in Bandarban Hill District will remain prohibited. All concerned parties are requested to take necessary precautions regarding this matter and strictly comply with the directives of the District Administration."
The heavy rain and subsequent disruptions highlight the vulnerability of Bangladesh's infrastructure to extreme weather events. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise residents and tourists to stay safe and follow official instructions.
