India Tops Global Remittance Charts with $138 Billion in 2024

India’s diaspora, the largest in the world at approximately 19 million people, has significantly contributed to the nation’s economic strength. With substantial numbers of international immigrants residing in the UAE, the United States, and Saudi Arabia, India has continued to be the top recipient of remittances globally. In 2024, the country achieved a remarkable milestone, recording inflows of $138 billion, according to the World Migration Report 2026 released by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

India’s Unmatched Remittance Growth

The report highlights that India was the only country to surpass the $100-billion mark in remittance inflows, underscoring the vast economic footprint of the Indian diaspora worldwide. Over the past decade, remittance inflows into India have risen sharply from approximately $53 billion in 2010 to over $137 billion in 2024. This growth has been driven by strong earnings of Indian workers and professionals in key host countries, including the United States, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.

Global Comparison

In comparison, Mexico, the second-largest recipient, received $68 billion in remittances in 2024. China’s inward remittances stood at $48 billion in 2022. India’s dominance in remittance flows reflects broader transformations in global migration patterns.

Shift Towards High-Skilled Migration

While Gulf nations continue to employ millions of Indian workers in construction, services, and domestic work, the report emphasizes a rapid rise in high-skilled migration from India. This trend is particularly noticeable in sectors such as technology, healthcare, engineering, and research. The report does not specify the top source countries for inward remittances to India, but it is understood that these would align with the countries hosting the largest Indian diaspora communities.

India’s emergence as a major source country for student and skilled migration further reinforces its global standing. The World Migration Report 2026 provides comprehensive insights into these evolving migration dynamics, highlighting India’s pivotal role in the global economy.
