India-US Partnership Most Consequential: US Envoy

The partnership between India and the United States is the most consequential global partnership of the century, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said on Wednesday, emphasizing that what the two nations accomplish together will shape the future.

Speaking at the Citi 2026 India Conference in Mumbai, Gor highlighted the deepening ties across multiple sectors, including civil nuclear energy, critical minerals, technology, and trade.

Nuclear Partnership at New Heights

Gor noted that the two countries are pushing their civil nuclear sector partnership to new levels. We are looking forward to decades of future cooperation between our civil nuclear sectors, he said, underscoring the strategic importance of energy collaboration.

High-Level Diplomatic Engagement

The ambassador pointed to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's four-day visit to India last month as a testament to the commitment. When we send out the highest level of engagement, it sends a direct message, Gor said, adding that Rubio does not travel on any four-day trips, making the visit an incredible commitment.

Private Sector Investments

Gor highlighted significant private sector investments from the US into India. Amazon plans to invest $35 billion by 2030 for AI-driven digitalization. Microsoft has announced a $17.5 billion investment, and Google a $15 billion AI hub in India. These commitments reflect a win-win situation, he noted.

Critical Minerals Framework

Just last week, the US and India officially signed the Critical Minerals Framework, a massive milestone to ensure foundational elements for advanced technology and energy are available within trusted networks. Together, we will protect supply chains from coercive practices and reduce vulnerability to single-source monopolies, Gor said.

TRUST Initiative and Pharma Cooperation

In February 2025, President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the TRUST initiative (Transforming the Relationship Utilising Strategic Technologies). Under this framework, the US is focused on boosting bilateral cooperation on AI development and expanding trusted supply chains for active pharmaceutical ingredients. Gor noted that the US imports close to 40% of its generic pharma from India.

Progress on Bilateral Trade Deal

Gor welcomed Assistant Trade Representative Brendan Lynch to India as the two countries continue finalizing the interim trade deal. In a post on X, he shared that progress is being made under the vision of PM Modi and President Trump to enhance trade and investment linkages.

The US and India announced in February 2025 a framework for an Interim Agreement on reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade, reaffirming commitment to a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The joint statement described the interim deal as a historic milestone demonstrating a common commitment to balanced trade based on mutual interests.
