Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi presented his credentials to Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Thursday at the Bangabhaban, the presidential palace in Dhaka. The ceremony included a guard of honour and marked the formal commencement of Trivedi's tenure as India's top diplomat in Bangladesh.
Ceremony and Welcome
Upon arrival at Bangabhaban, Trivedi was welcomed with a ceremonial guard of honour. He then met President Shahabuddin, who expressed hope that Trivedi would contribute significantly to the development of bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India during his tenure.
Upcoming Visit to Visa Application Centre
Following the credentials ceremony, High Commissioner Trivedi is scheduled to visit the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) at Jamuna Future Park later today. He will inspect visa operations and interact briefly with the media afterward.
Arrival and Background
Trivedi arrived in Dhaka by road on June 12, entering Bangladesh through the Petrapole-Benapole border. He succeeds Pranay Kumar Verma, who served as Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh for four years until May this year. The Ministry of External Affairs announced Trivedi's appointment on April 27, and he received his Letters of Credence from President Droupadi Murmu on June 5.
Political and Administrative Experience
Before assuming charge in Dhaka, Trivedi visited Netaji Bhavan in Kolkata, expressing confidence that India and Bangladesh would continue strengthening ties based on shared aspirations, democratic values, and people-to-people connections. A veteran politician, Trivedi has served as Union Minister for Railways and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the Manmohan Singh-led government. He represented West Bengal in both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, elected from Barrackpore constituency from 2009 to 2019.
Awards and Party Affiliation
Trivedi was honoured with the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for 2016-17 and chaired several parliamentary forums, including the Indo-European Union Parliamentary Forum. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2021 after resigning from the All India Trinamool Congress.
Strategic Importance of Appointment
This high-profile political appointment comes at a crucial juncture as India and Bangladesh actively seek to further ties across strategic sectors. The relationship between the two countries has been strengthening in areas such as trade, connectivity, energy, and security.
