IndiGo Starts Direct Chennai-Reunion Island Flights

IndiGo has commenced direct flight services between Chennai and Reunion Island, a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean. The inaugural flight was formally launched on Wednesday by the Ambassador of France in India, Thierry Mathou, along with the Consul General of France in Pondicherry and Chennai, Etienne Rolland-Piègue, who also travelled on the first flight.

Flight Schedule and Connectivity

The airline will operate the service three times a week, on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. This new route is expected to enhance connectivity, thereby strengthening tourism, trade, and people-to-people ties between the two regions. Reunion Island is home to a significant population of French citizens of Indian origin, particularly Tamils.

Official Statements

During his visit to Reunion Island, Mathou is scheduled to meet with local authorities, economic bodies, and civil society representatives. Welcoming the new route, Mathou commented, "I am delighted to mark the inaugural ceremony and board the first direct flight from Chennai to Saint-Denis, bringing India closer to Reunion Island. This link offers great potential for both tourism and trade, leveraging Reunion’s beautiful coastlines and its strategic location as a gateway to Europe and francophone countries."
