A startling wildlife incident unfolded in the rural areas of Kolhapur on Wednesday when an injured leopard entered the kitchen of a residential house in Dabholi village, located in Sindhudurg district. The unexpected intrusion triggered widespread panic among the local residents, leading to a swift response from forest department officials who successfully rescued the distressed animal and initiated medical treatment.
Panic and Commotion as Leopard Seeks Shelter
The dramatic episode began when the leopard, visibly weak and wounded, made its way into the kitchen of Vivek Joshi's home in the Dabholi-Korachiwadi area of Kudal tehsil. Joshi, an orchard farmer, recounted the harrowing experience, noting that the animal was first spotted in his farmland. "As all villagers tried to chase it away, the leopard entered our cattle shed and then directly into the kitchen of my house," he explained. "My mother was working in the kitchen when she ran out, scared. There was a huge commotion, but the leopard was calm and settled inside the kitchen. It seemed weak."
The family members immediately evacuated the premises and alerted authorities, setting the stage for a coordinated rescue effort. Forest department personnel arrived promptly at the scene, equipped with specialized nets and cages to safely capture the leopard without causing further harm to the animal or the villagers.
Forest Officials Detail Rescue and Medical Care
Sandeep Kumbhar, the range forest officer for Kudal, provided critical insights into the leopard's condition and the rescue operation. "We reached the incident spot, and with the help of a net and cage, the leopard was captured," he stated. "It is a 2-year-old female leopard. It had suffered a serious injury to the neck while crossing through a barbed wire fence. As the injury festered, the animal was deprived of food and became extremely weak. The leopard entered the house only to find shelter. It did not attack anyone."
The officials emphasized that the leopard's entry into the human habitation was driven by a desperate need for refuge and safety, rather than any aggressive intent. The animal's calm demeanor during the incident corroborated this assessment, as it remained passive despite the surrounding chaos.
Ongoing Treatment and Future Release Plans
Following the rescue, the leopard was placed under the expert care of veterinary officer Dr. Sharad Jadhav, who is overseeing its treatment for the severe neck injury. The forest department has confirmed that the animal is currently undergoing intensive medical attention to address its wounds and restore its health.
