Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held talks with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Beijing on Monday, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing the ongoing crisis in West Asia. The meeting underscored the strategic partnership between the two nations amid escalating tensions in the region.
Key Discussions
During the meeting, both ministers emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation in various fields, including trade, energy, and regional security. Araghchi highlighted Iran's commitment to deepening relations with China, a key ally and major trading partner. Wang Yi reaffirmed China's support for Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity, while calling for a peaceful resolution to conflicts in West Asia.
Regional Stability
The crisis in West Asia, particularly the situation in Gaza and Yemen, dominated the agenda. Araghchi and Wang Yi exchanged views on the need for de-escalation and the promotion of dialogue among regional stakeholders. China reiterated its stance on supporting a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and urged all parties to exercise restraint.
Bilateral Cooperation
Both sides reviewed the implementation of the 25-year cooperation agreement signed in 2021, which covers economic, security, and cultural collaboration. They expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and pledged to accelerate joint projects, including infrastructure development and energy partnerships. Trade between Iran and China has grown steadily, with China remaining Iran's largest trade partner despite international sanctions.
The meeting also touched on multilateral forums, with both ministers agreeing to coordinate positions within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the United Nations. They condemned unilateral sanctions and called for a fair and equitable international order.
Araghchi's visit to Beijing is part of a broader diplomatic tour aimed at rallying support for Iran's positions on regional issues. The talks concluded with a joint statement reaffirming the commitment to further strengthen the Iran-China strategic partnership.
