Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister has stated that Tehran would welcome any peace initiative from India regarding the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The senior Iranian diplomat also criticized one unnamed country for stalling a consensus within the BRICS grouping on the issue.
The comments came a day before India is set to host a conclave of BRICS foreign ministers, which precedes the annual summit of the grouping scheduled for September. The Iranian official expressed hope that India could play a constructive role in resolving the tensions in the region.
Iran's Stance on India's Role
Speaking to reporters, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister emphasized that Iran has always valued India's independent foreign policy and its historical ties with both Iran and other nations in West Asia. He noted that India's growing global influence makes it a suitable mediator for peace efforts.
“We will welcome any initiative by India that aims at reducing tensions and establishing peace in West Asia,” the Iranian diplomat said. He added that Iran has consistently supported dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts.
Stalemate within BRICS
The Iranian official also expressed frustration over the lack of consensus within BRICS on the West Asia conflict. He alleged that one particular country has been blocking a unified stance, preventing the grouping from issuing a joint statement or taking collective action.
“Unfortunately, one member state has been obstructing the consensus. This is not in the spirit of BRICS, which is built on mutual respect and understanding,” the Deputy Foreign Minister stated, without naming the country.
Iran is not a member of BRICS but has been engaging with the grouping as part of its outreach to emerging economies. The BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—have often sought to coordinate on global issues, but differences have emerged on matters related to West Asia.
Upcoming BRICS Conclave in India
India will host a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers on the sidelines of a major diplomatic event. The conclave is expected to discuss a wide range of issues, including the West Asia conflict, economic cooperation, and reforms in multilateral institutions.
The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister's remarks highlight the significance of India's role in the region and the expectations from the upcoming BRICS discussions. India has traditionally maintained a balanced approach in West Asia, engaging with all major players while advocating for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Analysts believe that India's mediation efforts could gain traction given its credibility with both Iran and other key stakeholders. However, the success of any peace initiative would depend on the willingness of all parties to engage constructively.
Regional Implications
The West Asia conflict has far-reaching implications for global energy markets, security, and humanitarian conditions. Iran has been a central player in the region, and its relations with neighboring countries and world powers have been tense in recent years.
India, as a major energy importer from West Asia, has a vested interest in stability in the region. The Indian government has consistently called for de-escalation and peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue.
The Iranian diplomat's statement also underscores the challenges faced by multilateral groupings like BRICS in reaching consensus on contentious issues. While BRICS has been effective in promoting economic cooperation, political differences often hinder collective action on geopolitical crises.
As the BRICS foreign ministers prepare to meet in India, all eyes will be on whether the grouping can overcome its internal divisions and present a unified front on West Asia. Iran's willingness to welcome India's peace initiative adds a new dimension to the diplomatic efforts in the region.
