Japanese PM Embarks on Three-Day Official Visit to India
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi departed from Tokyo on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, for New Delhi to participate in the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit Meeting. The visit, running from July 1 to July 3, marks her first official trip to India since assuming office. The Indian Embassy in Tokyo confirmed that preparations are complete in the national capital to welcome the Japanese delegation.
Embassy Welcomes Delegation Ahead of Summit
In a post on X, the Indian Embassy in Tokyo stated, "Prime Minister Takaichi is departing for New Delhi. In India, she will attend the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit Meeting. We wish for a safe journey to India for all members of the delegation. Preparations are in place in New Delhi to welcome everyone. We eagerly await your arrival." Takaichi is scheduled to land in Delhi on Wednesday evening for her three-day official visit.
Focus on Economic Ties and Strategic Cooperation
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the summit will review and strengthen the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation. The visit is expected to boost investment and innovation opportunities, strengthen economic ties, and enhance efforts to build resilient supply chains in areas such as semiconductors and critical minerals. Diplomatic sources indicated that discussions will also emphasize maritime security, defense technology cooperation, and the development of an "Industrial Value Chain" connecting the Bay of Bengal and Northeast India.
Continuation of High-Level Dialogues
The 16th summit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Tokyo in August 2025 for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit, reflecting the shared commitment to further enhance the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Both sides will exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest during the meeting.
