Residents of Kanpur witnessed a dramatic shift in weather conditions on Monday morning, as a brief period of pleasant climate was quickly replaced by warmer temperatures later in the day. After a slightly warm night, the city experienced a sudden change around 7 am, with dense clouds covering the sky, accompanied by cool breezes and light drizzle. This provided temporary relief to the locals, lasting for nearly an hour. However, by approximately 9 am, the clouds cleared, and bright sunshine returned, causing temperatures to rise once again.
Temperature Drop and Wind Patterns
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the temporary weather shift led to a drop of nearly 5 degrees Celsius in the maximum temperature, which was recorded at 31 degrees Celsius. Northeasterly winds blowing at speeds between 13.1 kmph and 33.9 kmph contributed to the relatively cool conditions during the morning hours. The drizzle was too brief to register any measurable rainfall.
Forecast for Tuesday
The IMD has forecast similar weather patterns for Tuesday, with mild sunshine interspersed with passing clouds. High humidity levels are expected to keep both the actual temperature and the heat index relatively moderate. The department has also predicted the possibility of light drizzle or showers accompanied by strong winds, dust storms, and isolated hailstorms on Tuesday.
Expert Analysis
Weather expert S Sunil Pandey from Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology explained that earlier expectations of evening dust storms and rainfall were revised in the latest update. He noted that the cloud trough line has shifted northwards towards the Himalayan foothills, reducing rainfall activity over southern regions, including the Kanpur division. Pandey added that the trough line remains dynamic, and if it had stayed at a lower latitude, heavy rainfall could have occurred across southern Uttar Pradesh and Bundelkhand, including Kanpur.
Ongoing Weather Variability
Despite the brief morning relief, the return of bright sunshine later in the day made conditions warmer once again, reflecting the ongoing variability in the region’s weather. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts as weather patterns continue to shift.
