The death toll from a major fire at an old shopping mall in Karachi, Pakistan has climbed to 14. Rescue teams recovered eight more bodies from the debris on Monday, officials confirmed.
Fire Breaks Out at Historic Commercial Hub
The blaze erupted late Saturday night at Gul Plaza. This multi-storey wholesale and retail market stands on MA Jinnah Road in the city's Saddar area. Firefighters brought the fire under control by Sunday night. However, rescue operations continued because large parts of the building suffered severe structural damage.
Initial Casualties and Rescue Challenges
Six bodies were found soon after the fire started. Officials believe these victims likely died from suffocation. Dozens of injured people received immediate treatment at nearby hospitals.
Thick smoke and intense heat initially prevented rescue teams from entering the building as the fire spread rapidly. "Once the fire was doused, we didn't wait for the cooling period and forcibly went in to rescue trapped people," said Rescue 1122 Chief Operating Officer Abid Jalal. "We found eight more bodies, some badly charred."
Building Structure Severely Compromised
Jalal explained that the fire almost completely damaged the building. Both the front and rear portions collapsed due to weakened pillars. "The structure has become extremely unsafe," he warned. "We are still searching as there is a risk of further collapses."
Gul Plaza was built in the early 1980s. It houses approximately 1,200 shops spread across a basement, mezzanine and three upper floors. For decades, it has served as a prominent commercial hub in Karachi.
Officials Fear More Victims Trapped
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori visited the site on Monday. He expressed deep concern that dozens of people could still be trapped inside. "We are extremely concerned and alarmed," Tessori told reporters. "Efforts are going on to find them but this is a national tragedy."
South Deputy Inspector General of Police Syed Asad Raza echoed these concerns. He stated the casualty count could rise further because large sections of the building remained unsearched.
Probable Cause and Safety Concerns
Officials suspect an electrical short circuit may have caused the fire. The exact cause will be confirmed after a full investigation concludes.
This tragic incident has once again highlighted serious fire safety concerns in Karachi. In recent years, several commercial buildings in the city have caught fire. Poor safety measures, faulty electrical systems and illegal construction often contribute to these disasters.
A government audit conducted in 2024 revealed alarming findings. Most shopping malls lacked proper fire safety systems. Many also had inadequate emergency exits and non-compliant wiring.
National Leaders Express Grief
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari both expressed profound grief over the loss of lives. The Sindh government has ordered an official inquiry into the incident to determine responsibility and prevent future tragedies.
