The 52nd G7 Summit commenced on Monday in the French spa town of Evian, gathering world leaders to tackle pressing economic disparities, geopolitical tensions, and global governance challenges. France is hosting the three-day event from June 15 to 17.
Macron's Vision for the Summit
In a video address posted on X on the eve of the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron outlined an extensive agenda covering regional crises, global trade imbalances, and cybersecurity. He confirmed the participation of core G7 members: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Japan, the European Commission, and the European Council President. Macron stated, "Together, we'll try to move forward on the major topics."
Broader International Cooperation
To foster deeper cooperation, France invited key global partners, including South Korea, India, Kenya, and Brazil. The host nation also invited Brazil, Egypt, India, Kenya, South Korea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates as 'outreach partner countries'. This marks India's 13th participation as a partner country, highlighting its growing global influence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend for the seventh consecutive time.
Core Agenda: Crises and Economic Imbalances
Macron listed world crises and economic imbalances as top priorities. Discussions will focus on Ukraine, with President Zelensky expected to attend to strengthen support for Ukraine's energy infrastructure and war effort, and to prepare conditions for lasting peace. The summit will also address macroeconomic governance, international financial architecture, global health, and energy security.
Middle East and Iran Nuclear Agreement
Significant attention will be given to Middle Eastern geopolitics, including a major nuclear agreement with Iran. Macron noted involvement from Egypt, Gulf countries, Qatar, and the UAE to discuss consequences of the agreement, support for Lebanon, reopening of Hormuz, and nuclear and ballistic issues in Iran. Leaders will also explore diversifying energy routes to reduce dependence.
International Trade and North-South Partnership
Macron emphasized reshaping international trade and supporting developing nations through a stronger North-South partnership. He mentioned expert work and exchanges with India, China, and G7 members to address global imbalances disrupting international trade.
Technology, AI, and Digital Safety
The agenda's final pillar focuses on regulating artificial intelligence. Macron announced discussions with major technology leaders to improve cybersecurity, resilience, and protect children and democracies. Several multilateral agreements will be adopted on critical minerals, rare earths, trade, health, cancer, Ebola, drug trafficking, and immigration.
Macron's Closing Remarks
Macron expressed pride in hosting the event in Evian, thanking residents for their patience and sending thoughts to graduates across France. The summit aims to create new agreements and convergence among G7 and partner countries to build common solutions and reduce global tensions.
