The higher and technical education department of Maharashtra has proposed the launch of an integrated portal to facilitate admissions to the top 500 QS-ranked international universities for students from the state. This initiative aims to provide credible and comprehensive information to aspirants, including brochures, fee structures, admission procedures, eligibility criteria, and other essential details.
Collaboration with Universities
The state government also plans to reach out to these universities to collaborate and disseminate authentic information directly to students. The portal will be exclusively for students from Maharashtra and will only facilitate admissions to the top 500 universities globally. A feasibility report on the proposal is expected to be presented to the higher and technical education minister shortly.
Free Services for Students
An official from the department stated that the services would be provided free of cost. “The idea is to provide authentic information to students and offer a direct link to the university's admission portal. We intend to provide them with the brochure, fees, and required paperwork, among other things. Software needs to be developed to link information to all top universities. We aim to eliminate middlemen and agents involved in the admission process,” the official said, referring to a recent case in Kandivli where families were defrauded of lakhs by an agency promising overseas education opportunities.
Discussion in Recent Meeting
The issue was discussed in a recent meeting with the higher and technical education minister. The proposed facility will be made available to students through the Admissions Regulating Authority in the state. Sources indicate that this exercise will also provide ready-made data on students from Maharashtra who are studying abroad, which can be useful during a crisis.
Maharashtra's Outbound Student Flow
Maharashtra accounts for approximately 12% of India's total outbound student flow. According to a recent Ministry of External Affairs report presented in Parliament, close to 19 lakh Indian students are studying abroad. The top destination countries include Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia.
The official added that the database would be valuable for the state government in crisis situations. “We will have first-hand information and data on students, at least on those who have gone to leading universities in the world,” the official said.
