A tragic incident occurred in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district on Tuesday, where a man lost his life and his wife sustained injuries after a tree fell on them amid strong winds and rain. The couple, identified as Mohammad Rafiq and his wife Mareena, residents of Brariangan, were standing near a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bunker in the Ganjiwara area when a poplar tree uprooted and collapsed onto the bunker.
Details of the Incident
The strong winds and heavy rain that lashed the Valley on Tuesday afternoon led to the tree falling on the CRPF bunker. The couple was immediately rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Anantnag, where Mohammad Rafiq succumbed to his injuries. His wife Mareena is currently receiving treatment for her injuries. Fortunately, no CRPF personnel were harmed in the incident.
Impact on Traffic and Weather
The fallen tree temporarily blocked traffic on the road, causing disruptions for commuters. The meteorological department has forecasted that a spell of rain and thundershowers would continue for a few hours across many parts of Kashmir. The weather office has issued advisories for residents to stay away from loose structures, electric wires, poles, and old trees during thunderstorms and lightning.
Precautionary Measures
Authorities have advised people to avoid venturing near vulnerable structures and to suspend boating and shikara rides in Dal Lake and other water bodies until the weather improves. The sudden downpour brought relief from the hot conditions that had prevailed earlier, but also posed risks due to the strong winds.
The incident highlights the dangers posed by extreme weather events and the need for caution during such conditions. The local administration is monitoring the situation and has urged residents to remain vigilant.
